Bicknacre Ride Report on 03/11/2013

We were joined at the start by David K, a new rider, who enjoyed himself despite the strong winds, but said he'd be buying winter gear for his next ride. I led a group out from Wickford, which went via Rawreth Shot, Battlesbridge, Rettendon, West Hanningfield and along Middlemead (the only sheltered part of the ride and with the wind behind us). Outside The Windmill pub, Ron S unfortunately punctured (he'd already suffered one at home on wheeling his bike out of the garage). Claude A volunteered (or was he coerced) to stay behind and assist, whilst the others proceeded to the Alpha Garden Centre in Wickford for elevenses. Peter W and his group were already here, although they had been caught up with hundreds of other cyclists around Billericay, and Peter H and Alan S were also present.

Eight went onto lunch and, as we were proceeding past The Bell pub at Rettendon, guess who punctured again — Ron S. We all stopped to assist (how many does it take to fix a puncture?) and just when we thought it was fixed it went BANG! Alas, he had no more inner tubes and nobody else had the correct size either, except the runs leader, who had decided to ride out on his Dawes Cross instead of his usual Orbea and had also purchased the correct sized tube the day before. That was fortuitous! We finally arrived at the Brewers Arms about 1.30 pm and met up with John & Sue S and Lynda C, who had arrived by car.
